{"id":914,"date":"2019-04-20T04:15:46","date_gmt":"2019-04-20T04:15:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mygardenguide.com\/?p=217"},"modified":"2019-04-20T04:15:46","modified_gmt":"2019-04-20T04:15:46","slug":"orchid-leaves-turning-yellow","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mygardenguide.com\/orchid-leaves-turning-yellow\/","title":{"rendered":"Orchid Leaves Turning Yellow"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>If you have an&nbsp;<strong>orchid with yellow leaves<\/strong>&nbsp;, it is logical and understandable that you are alarmed and think you may lose your orchid.&nbsp;<br> I&#8217;ll tell you something,&nbsp;<strong><em>if you do not act quickly you can lose it<\/em><\/strong> , but if you detect what the problem is and solve it in time, it will all finish in a happy ending. <br> There are&nbsp;<strong>four reasons why the leaves of the orchids turn yellow,<\/strong>&nbsp;three of them are very easy to solve, the worst is the last one:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li><strong>Problems with irrigation<\/strong><\/li><li><strong>Poor      lighting<\/strong><\/li><li><strong>Error with the use of fertilizer<\/strong><\/li><li><strong>Your orchid has fallen ill<\/strong><\/li><li>The leaves have completed their lifecycle<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>In the fifth option, there is little that you can do. either due to lack of irrigation or over-watering.&nbsp;<\/strong><br>\nThe most common is that they turn yellow when the irrigation is\nexcessive, but depending on the variety and the state of the orchid, it can\nalso be due to lack of irrigation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3><strong>Insufficient irrigation<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>In the Phalaenopsis orchids it\ncan happen that,&nbsp;<strong>even with a correct irrigation and leaves of normal\nappearance some of the leaves begin to turn yellow.&nbsp;<\/strong><br>\nIf it is not a new leaf, which will have a light green color, or a\nvery old leaf, which may be losing its color as a result of age, sometimes the\nwatering is not enough and some or some leaves begin to yellow.<strong><em><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>When the orchid leaves turn yellow for lack of irrigation, they become yellow from the ends towards the interior.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><br>\nIt is easy to solve.&nbsp;In these cases it is best to use&nbsp;<strong>irrigation\nby immersion, then let the orchid release the excess water.&nbsp;<\/strong><br>\nThe problem should be solved in a few days.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3><strong>Excess of water<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>This is the most common and probable cause of the orchid&#8217;s leaves turning yellow.&nbsp;<br> The most common orchids at home,&nbsp;<strong>the&nbsp;phalaenopsis&nbsp;, do not require frequent watering<\/strong>&nbsp;, on the contrary &#8230; they must be spaced and above all, controlling the needs of the plant through the roots.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img src=\"https:\/\/mygardenguide.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/yellow-leaves-in-old-plant.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-269\"\/><figcaption>ORCHID LEAVES TURNING YELLOW<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>I recommend&nbsp;<strong>taking\ninto account the variety of your orchid, to determine your irrigation\nneeds.&nbsp;<\/strong><br>\nAs a generic norm, the orchid with yellow leaves&nbsp;<strong>is\naffected by excessive watering when:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Most of the leaves      are yellow, not just the lower leaves.<\/li><li><strong>Black spots      appear on the leaves.<\/strong><\/li><li>The leaves      have become softer to the touch than normal, are soft and have lost      vitality.<\/li><li>We can      observe how&nbsp;<strong>the roots have a darker shade than usual, we can even      detect dark spots.<\/strong><\/li><li>It is      possible that&nbsp;<strong>the excess of water is causing rotting in the roots,<\/strong>&nbsp;in      this case it is convenient to&nbsp;change      the pot,&nbsp;eliminating      the affected roots.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Another reason why the leaves of the orchids can turn yellow, and in which the irrigation water becomes important, is in&nbsp;<strong>the amount of salts dissolved in the water (hard water, excess calcium and other salts).&nbsp;<\/strong><br> These salts end up staying in the substrate of the orchid, and can cause the leaves to turn yellow.&nbsp;In this case the solution is to&nbsp;<strong>change the substrate<\/strong>&nbsp;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3><strong>Yellow leaves due to excess lighting and temperature<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Orchids&nbsp;<strong>need (mostly)\ngood lighting, but they detest the direct sun.&nbsp;<\/strong><br>\nWhen the lighting is excessive, many varieties of orchids show it\nthrough their leaves, which&nbsp;<strong>take a lighter green or turn yellow,<\/strong>and\ntheir flowers can take on a darker color.&nbsp;<br>\nSometimes, when the exposure to the sun has been direct, we will<strong>appreciate\nburns on the leaves, easily detectable because the affected area withers.&nbsp;<\/strong><br>\nSo that leaf is not so ugly,&nbsp;<strong>you can cut the affected part\nof the leaf.&nbsp;<\/strong>Remember that for many of the orchids their leaves are\norgans for storing water and nutrients, it is not advisable to eliminate the\nleaves completely if it is not necessary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3><strong>Fertilization errors<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Fertilization errors in\norchids can also cause yellowing of the leaves and their fall.&nbsp;<br>\nYou have to be very&nbsp;<strong>careful with fertilizers for orchids,<\/strong>&nbsp;as\nthey have to be specific and use them in the proportions marked by the\nmanufacturers.&nbsp;<br>\nAn excess of fertilization will cause the opposite effect of what\nwe want to achieve, the orchid will begin to weaken and its leaves will turn\nyellow.&nbsp;<br>\n<strong>The doses and the periods in which fertilizers must be used, will\ndepend on the variety.&nbsp;<\/strong>The golden rules for using fertilizers\nare:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>As a\n     rule,&nbsp;<strong>orchids are fertilized during their growth period.<\/strong><\/li><li><strong>Always be\n     fertilized after irrigation or in combination with irrigation water<\/strong>&nbsp;.&nbsp;It is never fertilized with the dry\n     substrate.<\/li><li>Depending on\n     the variety,&nbsp;<strong>when the winter arrives, the subscriber must be\n     reduced or eliminated.<\/strong><\/li><li>If we have a\n     weak or sick orchid, it should not be paid.<\/li><li><strong>Do not pay\n     during the first days after a transplant.<\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>A lack of nutrients and\nfertilizer could cause the leaves to yellow, although&nbsp;<strong>the excess of\nfertilizer is always more dangerous.&nbsp;<\/strong><br>\nIn these cases the orchid yellows due to lack of potassium,\nusually because the substrate is already old.&nbsp;This circumstance is easy to\nsolve, transplanting the orchid to a new substrate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3><strong>Orchids that yellow because they are sick<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The diseases that usually\ncause orchids with yellow leaves, have to do with&nbsp;<strong>infections caused by\nfungi or viruses.&nbsp;<\/strong><br>\nWhenever we observe an orchid with yellow leaves we must isolate\nit from the rest, until we have clear what the problem is, preventing the disease\nfrom spreading and ending up being a plague.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3>Fungi<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignwide\"><img src=\"https:\/\/mygardenguide.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/fungi.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-270\"\/><figcaption>ORCHID LEAVES TURNING YELLOW: IN THIS CASE; IT IS CAUSED BY FUNGI: THIS IS A VERY HUMID LOCATION WITHOUT ADEQUATE VENTILATION<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>When the attacks are caused by\nfungi,&nbsp;<strong>we will see leaves with yellow dots and the black center.&nbsp;<\/strong><br>\nMany Asian orchids suffer attacks by fungi, without it being a\nserious problem for the orchid.&nbsp;<br>\nThe main reason for fungi to appear is in&nbsp;<strong>poor\nventilation, too high humidity, accompanied by poor lighting.&nbsp;<\/strong><br>\nTo avoid the appearance of fungi, we will avoid watering the\nleaves, we will improve the ventilation of the place destined to the orchids,\nand we will improve their lighting.&nbsp;<br>\nIt should be&nbsp;<strong>complemented with a systemic fungicide,<\/strong>&nbsp;to\ncompletely reduce the problem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3><strong>Virus<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>If the attack is caused by a\nvirus, the solution is simple &#8220;if it is solved&#8221;, although&nbsp;<strong>the\nattack by virus is irreversible.&nbsp;<\/strong><br>\nIn these cases the only thing we can do is to&nbsp;<strong>improve the\norchid&#8217;s situation<\/strong>&nbsp;, how I have commented a couple of lines above and\nwait for the virus to subside.&nbsp;<br>\nAfter a while, if it does not return, it&nbsp;<strong>is better to get\nrid of the affected sample &#8230;
