DIY Drip Irrigation

Due to the consequences of climate change and the financial crisis that is affecting the entire planet, several of us have our favorite green corner in a rather dry land. In addition, we all want to save as much as possible in the garden, right?

One of the ways to do it is by making your own homemade drip irrigation . Do you want to know how? Take note, and start saving water.

The easiest system that I am going to tell you is to make your drip irrigation with plastic bottles . Every day several are thrown away in each home, but what about giving them a new life by helping us water the plants? For this, you only need one bottle (the more capacity you have, the more water you can give your pots for a longer time), a sharp object (sewing scissors, needles or a knife) and thin pvc cords or tubes. Although the latter is optional, for land with a tendency to compact, or if you go on vacation for a few days and do not want your plants to be very thirsty, it is highly recommended.

Once you have it all, it’s time to get down to work to enjoy your homemade drip irrigation as soon as possible.

There are several variants of this system; and, as they say, each teacher has his book. All are equally effective, so I’ll tell you and then you choose the one that is easiest for you.

Holes in the cap and put the bottle in the ground (or pot)

This you can see in the image above. It is, perhaps, the most practical and useful if you are going to be absent for a long time. You just have to make holes in the cap of the bottle, cut the bottom, insert the bottle back into the ground or in the pot, and connect a hose to a tap.

Insert a pvc tube or cord into the plug

I saw this variant very recently and I found it very curious. It is a great idea to save even more water, and so that the roots can absorb it little by little, avoiding problems. To do this you just have to make a hole in the cap, insert a cord or tube , fill the bottle with water, and that’s it.

Remove the cap and put the bottle in the ground

This third variant is interesting to put either in the garden or on land. You have to remove the stopper, make very small holes in the bottle and put it on the ground. Finally, you fill it with water.

Solar home drip irrigation

Finally let’s talk about how to create your homemade solar drip irrigation . This type of drip irrigation is a very simple technique, which will allow you to save up to 10 times more water . You need a large bottle of 5l (or more) and a smaller one. The big one you have to cut the base, and the small one the top half. The latter will be the one that contains the water, and the larger one will prevent the liquid from being lost through evaporation .
