What Is Pollination

What Is Pollination

Pollination is of vital importance for all plant species . Without it, they would not exist. Therefore, many have entrusted this task to animals: bees, ants, butterflies, and even some mammals such as rodents have assumed the responsibility of bringing pollen from one flower to another.

But not only do they pollinate the flowers, but also the wind helps. Let’s know what pollination consists of .

Pollination consists of transferring the pollen from the stamens to the stigma or receptive part of the flowers of the angiosperm plants . That is where the ovule is, which is fertilized and which will become fruits and seeds.

Pollen is transported by different birds, insects, and other animals, but also wind or water, although it must be said that the plants that choose to let the latter take charge are very few.

There are different pollinations depending on the type of plant, for example:

  • Anomophilic plants : are those that are pollinated by the wind.
  • Hydrophilic plants : water pollinates its flowers.
  • Plants zoophiles : the animals are in charge of taking the pollen from one flower to another. These are the ones that usually have the most striking flowers, since they must attract them if they want to be pollinated. And the competition can be very big, especially in a meadow or in the jungle.

But, unfortunately, natural pollination is being threatened . The use of pesticides, the invasion of parasites and other organisms, the loss of habitat and the current climate change are causing the animals that are dedicated to it to disappear.

We usually think that we can always count on the flowers being pollinated, but we are wrong. Without pollinators, our existence would be seriously compromised.
