Vascular Plants

The Regnum vegetabile is old and very, very broad. There are billions of species, and it is still believed that the human being has not finished discovering everything, so it is likely that we still have a good percentage of plants to discover.

Within this group we find vascular plants , a type of plant being that is currently the most abundant on planet Earth. Which are your principal characteristics? The ones that we are going to tell you next ????.

What are vascular plants?

These are types of plants that have roots, stems and leaves , which are fed thanks to a vascular system that is responsible for distributing water and nutrients so that they can develop and grow. This system is formed by the xylem, which distributes the crude sap from the roots to the leaves, and the phloem, which is responsible for transporting the sap from the leaves to the rest of the plant.

Within this group there are two divisions, which are:

  • Pteridophytes : are those plants that reproduce by means of spores, such as ferns or equisetos.
  • Spermatophytes :
    • Gymnosperms: they do not have fruits that protect the seed and the flowers are unisexual, like the conifers, the cicadas or the Ginkgo biloba .
    • Angiosperms: the flowers can be hermaphroditic, and always protect the seed. They are divided in two: –
Monocotiledóneas: they are those that present / display a single embryonic leaf, like the grasses or the palms .
-Dicotiledóneas: they have two cotyledons and a secondary growth, such as trees or shrubs.

What use do they have?

The vascular plants have an enormous importance for the human being. Many of them produce edible fruits ; others are so beautiful that we use them to decorate the gardens and patios ; from others we extract their sap to prepare juices or medicines . Without this type of plants, people would have serious problems to get ahead.
