Types Of Flowers

Types Of Flowers

There are millions of types of plants and flowers on our planet. Normally, the most beautiful flowers are chosen to decorate gardens, interiors, public spaces and buildings. However, do you know how many different types of flowers exist and how they are classified?

If you want to know the types of flowers there are, this is your post ????

Classification of flower types

You have to know that there are two types of plants. On the one hand, being more primitive, there are gymnosperms. These plants do not produce flowers at any stage of their life. On the other hand, being the group that we are going to see in depth, there are angiosperms . These plants bloom when they reach their adult stage. The flowers are used as a means of pollination and reproduction. Thanks to the fact that insects and other animals drink the nectar of one flower and go to another, they are able to fertilize the plant and reproduce to expand its distribution area.

Within angiosperms there are two types of flowers very easily recognizable to the naked eye. First, we find the monocots . These plants have only one cotyledon and their flowers usually have petals in a multiple number of three. Second, we have the dicotyledons . These plants, as the name suggests, have two cotyledons and the flowers have petals in a multiple number of four or five.

There are also other ways to classify flowers, especially for plants that are annual. We find perennial, biennial and ephemeral plants. Each corresponds to the time in which they remain in bloom. Some gardeners classify the plants depending on their type of reproduction. If it is sexual or asexual.

It should be mentioned that it is important that when trying to classify a monocotyledonous or dicotyledonous plant, it must be taken into account that many petals can be united between them or the leaves to some parts of the plant and their differentiation is confusing. However, sorting flowers in this way is very basic. Something more complex is needed to differentiate them well.

Characteristics of angiosperms

Within the angiosperms there are around 250,000 to 400,000 different types of flowers. These are divided into monocotyledons and dicotyledons. A cotyledon is the seed capsule where it develops. It contains the necessary food so that the embryos can grow and develop. When the seed grows it will send one or two cotyledons (depending on which type of flower it is) to the leaves.

Monocotyledons form a quarter of all angiosperms in the world. For example, roses are dicotyledonous flowers. To differentiate between one and another we can see that the monocots have the veins of the leaves parallel and begin at the base of the leaf , ending at the tip without any branching. For example, the lilies.

On the other hand, the veins of the dicotyledons begin from the lower part and branch off in an ordered networkover the entire surface of the leaf.

The easiest way to recognize a type of plant is when it is growing. When they get to the surface of the earth, you can see those that have a leaf and those that have two.

Monocotyledonous and dicotyledonous

Monocotyledons can have up to millions of individual fibrous roots without having a central main root. The leaves are similar since their veins do not branch from a central vein. The veins run parallel to each other.

Some monocotyledonous flowers are: lilies, orchid, tulip, saffron, narcissus and bell. All these flowers fulfill the mentioned characteristics.

The dicotyledons have a main root through which more small roots come out branching more and more. Its leaves, in the same way, have a central vein from which the other veins branch off. The roots of these plants can cover a large area of land to cover food needs correctly.

Among the dicotyledonous flowers we find: rose, daisy, capuchin, begonia and portulaca.

Desert plants with flowers

Although it is thought otherwise, the desert is an ecosystem inhabited by many living beings. The plants that live there need to adapt to environments whose conditions are extreme. They should be able to collect and store water from the few precipitations that there are and have systems to avoid the loss of water. The plants in the desert look very different from the ones in the rest. This is because they have to adapt to situations.

But it does not mean that these plants, although they have a different morphology, do not flourish. Among its features we find:

  • The shrub plants are able to reduce the loss of water thanks to their waxy leaves and a scent to prevent animals from feeding on it.
  • Cacti have small spines on the surface of their leaves to prevent animals from eating them. They are capable of storing up to 800 liters of water .
  • Desert plants perform photosynthesis on the stem, which is green and contains chlorophyll
  • The roots are long enough to absorb as much water as possible.

The plants that have flowers in the desert are the cactus, saguaro cactus, desert agave and the desert rose.

Plants with more resistant flowers

These plants are seasonal plants able to adapt to the temperature and climate of certain areas. Plants that have a more robust flowering are able to tolerate low temperatures without dying, more heat or wind and even survive floods.

Among these more resistant plants we have: corn, eggplant, squash, tomato, petunias, fog love and other hanging plants with flowers.

Among the hanging plants with flowers we find those small evergreen shrubs that can be grown in hanging pots. Its flowers are used to plant in the yards and even in the fences. They are usually sown in the month of April and early June. They are the rose of moss, lantana, fuchsia, verbena, etc.
