The Tradescantia belongs to the family of Commelináceas . The most common species are: Tradescantia fluminensis, Tradescantia pallida , Tradescantia albiflora, Tradescantia spathacea (Rhoeo discolor),Tradescantia sillamontana , Tradescantia zebrina , Tradescantia brevicaulis, Tradescantia virginiana,Tradescantia multiflora .

It is a genus of about 30 species of herbaceous and perennial plants that extends throughout the Americas. The first specimens arrived in Europe more than 300 years ago.

It may have the erect or creeping bearing. The leaves are lanceolate and somewhat fleshy. It should remain in a shady place and at a temperature above 10º-12ºC. The risks must keep it moist but if the temperature is low to be suspended.


Tradescantia Fluminensis

The earth must be fertilized with organic matter. From May to August it is convenient to add a mineral fertilizerwith irrigation every 15 days. The transplant must be made when necessary, from spring to autumn.

The Tradescantia can be grown in pots and hanging baskets, since it looks better in this way.

It resists well the lack of light, so it is suitable for decorating the bathrooms. The air currents predispose it to be attacked by aphids .

It is advisable to renew it every year by means of cuttings during the summer since the growth is very fast .
