5 Types Of Ferns To Have AT Home

What are the ferns that we like so much? It is difficult to specify it. It is known that they are very old plants, so much, that they are considered living fossils since they appeared much earlier than the dinosaurs, about  420 million years ago . In addition, fronds-leaves-sprout in a very curious way: unrolling. There is no other type of vegetable that has developed just like them.

And as if that were not enough, despite having a slow growth, there are many species that we can grow both in pots and in the garden. In this article we will recommend 5 that are easy to get in nurseries and that, sure, will give you great satisfaction.

Kalkaster Or Asplenium Nidus

The Asplenium nidus , known as the Bird’s Nest Fern, or as Asplenium, is native to the rainforests of New South Wales and Queensland, in Australia. Its fronds are whole, lanceolate, bright, with the central nerve very visible both on the beam and on the underside, which acquires a dark brown color. The adult plant can reach 2m in height, and supports punctual frosts of up to -2ºC .

Blechnum gibbum

The Blechnum gibbum , or the parrot Yerba as it is sometimes called is an arborescent fern native to New Caledonia that reaches 2m in height. The fronds are long, 50cm, very divided. Although it is very sensitive to cold, if it is sheltered it can endure very soft frosts of up to -1ºC .

BLECHNUM GIBBUM

Cyathea

Cyathea are ferns, most of them arborescent, that grow in humid tropical forests and in temperate forests. They can measure up to 6 meters in height, and their leaves are long, up to 1m in length. The trunk is very thin, 40 cm in diameter maximum, and resists light frosts of up to -2ºC , especially the Cyathea cooperi , which is the one that also grows without problems in very hot environments (up to 38ºC).

Dicksonia antarctica

The Dicksonia antarctica , now called Balantium antarcticum , is an arborescent fern native to Australia. It can grow up to 15m in height, although it does not usually exceed 5m. Its fronds are long, up to 2m long, light green. The trunk is thin, 40-50cm in diameter. Supports up to -5ºC .

Nephrolepis exaltata

This fern is so common that it has become known by the name of, precisely, common or domestic fern. It is native to tropical regions around the world, especially the rainforests. Grows type mat, with long and curly fronds, up to 2m in height. It supports very soft frosts and of very short duration of up to -1ºC .
