Bermuda Grass Cynodon Dactylon

Bermuda Grass Cynodon Dactylon

Bermuda Grass (Cynodon Dactylon)

The grass known by the scientific name Cynodon dactylon is, by far, the most widely used in both garden lawns and sports fields in some parts of the United States and Southern Europe. Not only is it easy to maintain but it will not be necessary to water it too often.

So if you live in a place where the temperatures tend to be high most of the year and you would like to have a green carpet that does not need a lot of care, we suggest you do with seeds of Cynodon, a plant from which we are going to tell absolutely everything .

Characteristics of the Bermuda Grass (Cynodon dactylon)

Our protagonist is a rhizomatous perennial herb that produces stolons . It is known by different common names such as bermuda, grass, fine grass, grass, Bermuda grass or Bermuda grass. It belongs to the botanical family Poaceae and is native to northern Africa and southern Europe.

It is characterized by having gray-green leaves that turn yellow with cold. They measure from 4 to 15cm in length and sometimes they are vilosas in the envés. The stems are erect or decumbent, from 1 to 30cm in length. The flowers appear grouped in ears of 2 to 3 mm long, glabrous.

It is able to resist drought well thanks to its root system, which can grow to more than two meters deep. In spite of this, it does not have the necessary force to cause damage to pipes or soils, so that it can be placed close to them without problems, preferably as a unique species since it has an invasive character and often unbalances the mixture.

If in any case you want to combine it with other grass species, we recommend the following:

  • Agrostis estolonifera (Rye grass)
  • Festuca arundinacea

Bermuda Grass (Cynodon dactylon) Care

This is a very easy maintenance herb. However, like all plants she also has her preferences, which are the following:

Location

It has to be planted in an area where it will give sunlight directly , if possible throughout the day. Tolerates the shade very badly, to the point that its leaves can turn whitish due to the lack of chlorophyll.

Irrigation

Irrigation should be frequent during the months of more heat, preventing the soil from drying out too much so that it looks intense green. The ideal thing is to schedule the waterings so that you receive at least a little water every day.On the other hand, during the autumn and the winter the irrigations must be spaced because it stops its growth.

Fertilizer

Important to pay with fertilizers rich in nitrogen once a month from spring until late summer / early autumn to make it look nice all year round.

Soil

It grows in all types of soils , except in acids (pH between 4 and 6).

Sowing

The seeds have to be sown in spring . For this, first it will be convenient to prepare the land by removing the wild herbs and stones, leveling it and installing the drip irrigation system. Afterwards, the seeds are scattered trying not to form piles, the curl is passed and it is watered.

They will begin to germinate very soon, after 3-4 days.

Pruning

Due to its rapid growth it will be necessary to pass the lawnmower often . The height of the cut should be between 2 and 5 centimeters.

Plagues and diseases

It’s very tough. On the coast it can be affected by the fungus Sclerotinia homoeocarpa , which causes the disease called Dollar Spot . When that happens, more or less circular areas appear where the grass looks dry.

The treatment consists in removing the affected part, leveling the soil, sowing some seeds and treating the lawn with fungicide to prevent the proliferation of this microorganism.

Propagation

It reproduces easily by stolons and by seeds .

Resilience and Resistance

Hold cold and weak frosts well up to -2ºC , but you have to know when the temperature drops below 10ºC the leaves can get a bit ugly. Therefore, if you live in an area where frosts are usually produced, even if they are very punctual and of short duration, it is very advisable to have a lawn that has Cynodon dactylon and any of the two species mentioned above.

So your green carpet will look green all year round, and not with brown areas during the coldest time.

This is an ideal herb for gardens, regardless of how many people live in the house. It resists footprints very well and also recovers with amazing rapidity from external aggressions during the growing season.

But if this seems like little to you, let me tell you that it easily tolerates temporary floods , something that never hurts to know when you are in a place where sometimes the rain falls in a torrential way.
