| Friday Five: Trendy Vegetables |

![]() Vegetables in trendy shapes and colors remain one of gardening's hottest trends. I’m not surprised. Here are few of the odd and not-so-odd vegetables (and one most people call a fruit) that I've discovered. 1. Square watermelons Now this is a great idea. My family is a big fan of watermelon fruit and homemade watermelon popsicles, but I have to tell you, it’s not easy cutting a large round, smooth object like this on a level countertop. 2. Parisian round carrots Round carrots? Sure, I’d try these. I’d even grow them myself. 3. Red kernel corn Officially known as Ruby Queen Hybrid Sweet Corn, this corn is actually quite stunning and probably tastes yummy (most corn does). That’s of course provided you get past the feeling that you’re biting into an ear of dried Indian corn. 4. Violetta artichokes I find the violetta artichokes quite appealing. Perhaps it’s because purple is one of my favorite colors, or maybe because I like beets, which are a reddish-purple color, but the color wouldn’t deter me from eating this artichoke. 5. Gold Chard The gold chard pictured above, looking larger than life, gives us yet another choice when it comes to chard. And I thought the version of chard with red stems and dark green leaves was colorful enough. Guess not! Photo source: www.mariquita.com |
