 Is your yard filled with mole tunnels? If so, moles--those pesky animals that dig an underground network of tunnels in search of delectable grubs, earthworms, and other tasty morsels--have probably taken up residence in your lawn. When Mr. Mole strikes in your backyard what should you do? The first option is to use fumigants, but as environmentally friendly gardeners this isn't the best option, and it can be expensive. The second method is to use traps to either capture the moles alive or dead. Traps are effective but not necessarily humane, and the question remains as what to do with the moles after they're caught. Third, you can try a Vibrasonic Mole Chaser  . Resembling an oversized pencil, the mole chaser is buried in the ground and has a motor that causes vibrations that are irritating to moles.
Products made from castor oil are effective at keeping moles away because of the toxicity of the oil. You can make your own castor oil repellent by mixing 6 ounces of 100 percent unrefined castor oil with 2 tablespoons of liquid detergent in 1 gallon of water. Dilute the mixture at a rate of 1 ounce per gallon of water and apply liberally with a sprayer. This recipe is enough to cover about 300 square feet. It's necessary to spray the entire area that you want the moles to stay away from. Before spraying the repellent, irrigate the area to be treated with 1/2 inch of water before applying the repellent solution and follow with 1 inch or more of water. Source: NebGuide
Lastly, if you're brave or fed up enough (like the reader that suggested this topic) you can try molecology where moles are flushed from their tunnels using the spray from a garden hose, captured in a sack, placed in a bucket and transported to a field far, far away. Be forewarned that angry moles can bite. |
