One of life’s pleasures is receiving a beautiful bouquet of flowers cut fresh from the garden or picked from the meadow. Unfortunately, many gardens are covered in snow right now and anyone wishing to give their sweetheart a beautiful bouquet of flowers for Valentine’s Day must resort to visiting the local florist, flower market, or even the supermarket.

The good news is that there is often a stunning array of flowers to choose from. The bad news is that many of those flowers are grown here and abroad using pesticides you’d probably rather not be exposed to. That’s just one of the reasons why the organic flower movement is gaining momentum in the US.

According to a recent article in the San Francisco Chronicle, the $6 billion American cut-flower industry has been slow to embrace the idea of an eco-label for cut flowers, even though these programs have been popular in Europe for years. A group of floral retailers and distributors is working to change this going so far as to ask one of the certifying agencies for the USDA’s National Organic Program to develop a set of standards they call VeriFlora.

VeriFlora certified flowers are grown using organic farming methods including conserve water, establish buffer zones to protect native habitats and without chemicals and pesticides. As of this year flowers grown on VeriFlora-certified farms will be labeled as such on the bouquet.
