 Several months ago I received an email from a woman named Linda Hunt asking permission to use a photo of some marigolds from my website, Marigold Lane. It also turned out that she had an interesting story to share. It's a story that I would like to share with you. In June 2011, Linda Hunt was planting flowers near the front door of an inner-city drop-in program for street youth in Spokane, Washington when a man from a center next door that provides services for homeless men and women walked over to her. The two struck up a conversation, obviously sharing an interest in gardening and flowers. After a few moments the man disappeared and returned with a seed packet of dwarf French marigold seeds, which he then offered her. Hunt took the seeds home and planted them in her garden. While the marigolds were growing in her garden, an idea was growing in her head. In October she harvested the seeds and through 2012, free marigold seed packets harvested from the Marigold Man's original gift will be sent to the first 150 people who register as "generosity planters" on her website. In turn, generosity planters are expected to continue the cycle this fall of growing, harvesting, and sharing. "My hope is to honor and share his spirit of generosity across the nation," says Hunt, who has created a website dedicated to the Marigold Project as she sometimes calls it. So far she has participants in 14 states. To keep track of where these seeds are being planted, she's created a map that shows people how that initial act of kindness and generosity has spread across the country.
