 Some additional advice about Growing Rhubarb… “The question about rhubarb going to seed was never addressed. One should cut off the seed stalks at the base as they form, and not let them develop, which just uses up the plant's energy. Also, one can start pulling stalks to eat as soon as they are big enough, and not wait for seed. I harvest until the fall.” --Karen Another way to Dog-Proof the Garden… “I use cayenne pepper in my garden beds to keep the cats out. I buy the large size from the membership warehouse. Also, for a while a dog was doing his business on the grass easement every morning right where my husband had to walk to his car. I sprinkled cayenne pepper all over the grass and the dog (and his bad owner) have not been back!” --Alannah And….one more solution for Cat-Proofing Your Garden. “Here's one I recommend to my students: Rue. It was actually called "Cats Rue" in the middle ages, for good reason. I suggest they plant it under bird baths/feeders and crush up a few leaves when they replenish water and food. Some folks with very sensitive skin may present with itching, redness, etc. from handling it. On the other hand, it's a great companion to figs!” -- Andres Mejides, Owner Elfin Acres Organic Farm 1st Annual Espoma Environmental Stewardship Awards The Espoma Company, in partnership with the National Gardening Association, is proud to announce the 1st Annual "Espoma Environmental Stewardship Award". The award is provided annually by the National Gardening Association to five gardeners and to five retailers nationwide who voluntarily demonstrate outstanding environmental practices and initiatives. Each applicant will be judged on categories such as Water Conservation, Energy Efficiency, Recycling, Clean Air and the use of Environmentally Friendly Products like native plants and organic plant foods. Each gardener award winner will receive a $500 Gift Card to their favorite Garden Center and will be announced at the Garden Writers Symposium in Tucson Arizona in October. The top retail award winner will be invited to the Independent Garden Center Show in Chicago to receive the award.
